Get off the couch and lose some weight the Easy Way: Don't Eat. Wow. Yes, cool. What I did in the last three weeks was stop eating junk like potato chips, chocolate, extra servings of food I didn't really need, alcohol, and eating between meals. Losts a bit of weight. Try it. You'll lose weight, too.

Next three weeks: More exercise and a little bit less food. I'm aiming to lose about five kilos in the next two months. Wish me luck.

Excercise. Eat right. Lose weight. Get in shape for Summer or stave off the Sit-At-Home-In-Front-Of-The-Boob-Tube routine that we are apt to fall into during the dark days and nights in the Northern Hemisphere.

Exercise: Walk, lift some weights, move. Eat right: Fruits, vegetables but not beer and junk (chips).

Lifting weights plus cardio plus food intake should be your triangle of weight loss. Why?

Reducing food intake will reduce the amount of calories you put in your body which will force your body to use up some of the fat you've stored.

Cardio exercises such as walking, swimming, biking, or jogging improves your heart and lungs and uses up more calories.

Weight lifting increases your metabolism so that your body continues to consume calories even when you are asleep. More calories than if you didn't lift weights.

You don't have to be a bodybuilder to lift weights. If all you can heft is 5 lbs twice, that's a start. Start with lifting 5 lbs twice, then go for a walk. Increase the repetitions gradually. Then, increase the weight. Start at a comfortable weight and a comfortable number of reps, then increase gradually. Afterwards, go for a walk to do the cardio stuff.

A study by Loyola University says we get fat because of what we eat and exercise, while important, is not the be all and end all that people think it is. What you eat is what you are, so to speak. You eat fat, you get fat. You eat thin, you get thin.

This can't be a surprise to anyone. If you sit on your couch and gobble up a ton of chips, you're going to end up looking like Jabba the Hutt, right? If you eat your rabbit food and take a walk a day, you don't end up sloshing your way through the all-you-can-eat line like an out-of-shape elephant.

But! Is it enough to change our lifestyles and get off our couches? Yes! You can do it! (To quote someone).

A study of Americans - the world's fattest - has shown that even 15 minutes of exericse a day can help stave off death by a few years. Fifteen minutes, people! Is that too much to ask to push yourself away from the TV, get off the couch and go for a walk? You can even listen to music as you walk. Or learn a foreign language. Or enjoy the sunshine.

Fifteen minutes everyday or 30 minutes four times a week. Or, better yet, 45 minutes four times a week. PLUS, eat less junk - beer, chips, fatty meats - and you might just end up feeling better, being slimmer, and get more dates. Maybe.

Is there a benefit to exercising while losing weight? Yes, but it is quicker to lose weight by not eating than it is by exercising to overload. If you eat a pizza and a coke, you're packing on an extra 800 calories or so. By walking briskly for an hour, you're losing about 200 - 300 calories depending on your weight. You'd have to walk for a couple three hours to lose just the calories from the pizza. Better to just not eat the pizza, right?

What is the benefit to exercise? You do lose weight - 300 calories for an hour's walk is nothing to sneeze at. And it beats sitting on the couch watching reruns of Baywatch. Kind of. Not only will you lose some weight and get in shape, you'll feel better, too. In two ways: by accomplishing something and by getting in better shape. A win-win situation.

Episode 81: Cholesterol, again
Clean

Cholesterol is junk in your arteries blocking the flow of blood. With too much cholesterol, you end up having a stroke or heart attack. These are not nice things. Four ways to reduce cholesterol are:

  1. diet
  2. exercise
  3. lose weight
  4. drugs

Lots of cholesterol comes from the food we eat: meat, cheese, butter and french fries. The fries might have transfats which is hydrogen blown into cooking oil. If we eat correctly - ie eliminate foods with lots of cholesterol - we might reduce the amount of cholesterol in our blood. If we exercise, we can accomplish the same thing. If we exercise and eat correctly, we will lose weight which also contributes to a lowering of cholesterol.

This is not a fad or short-term event. This is a  lifestyle change.

But before you try any of these things, consult a medical professional; get a physical check up and take his or her advice seriously.

Check out this site for info about muscles. The Facts About Fitness. Good read.

We learned, for example, that the heart works harder while you are at rest than muscles but muscles work harder than fat. You need more muscles than fat, right? You need to lift weights to gain muscles. But you can't lift the same weight for a year and expect to gain muscles. You have to increase the weights.

Do we need a year plan? Perhaps, eh? Start out at a comfortable weight, lift and increase the mount you lift and perhaps your muscles will increase. Good plan. Plus we will be walking and watching what we eat. If we stick to our plan perhaps our excess weight will disappear and our muscles will re-appear. Okay.

Remember: before starting an exercise or diet routine,

see a doctor to make sure you're not harming yourself.

Episode 79: The Tripod of Weight Loss
Clean
April 12, 2011 07:39 PM PDT

A little research on my part produced the following results on weight loss. First, muscles use energy all the time. This means that even while you sleep, muscles are consuming calories. This is good. Second, fat does not use energy all the time. Fat is the energy that your body uses when it can't get any other energy (food). This means that you want more muscles than fat if you are serious about losing weight.

You don't really gain muscles by doing aerobic exercises such as running or walking. (You get some, of course, if you are starting out from zero but in the long run, your body only creates the muscles it needs.) Therefore, in order to lose weight more efficiently, we should get some muscles. How? By lifting weights.

Lifting weights is one part of a tripod of weight loss. The other two legs are watching our diet and getting aerobic exercise - walking. From this week - today - we should include a little weight lifting in our exercise routine. This does not mean run out, join a gym, pump iron until your shoulders bulge out over your ears. It means lifting something a little bit heavier than you usually lift. Lift it ten times, rest 45 secons, lift again. We should do this after stretching. We should also do this at least three times a week.

Before starting any exercise or diet routine,

check with a medical professional.

Here's the music from MusicAlley.com:

Clean

Muscle use more energy than fat. Sort of like people - active people use more energy than lazy people. To that end, perhaps we should be adding weightlifting to our exercise regime.

I'm not saying run out to a gym and plunk down a ton of money so that you can feel the pain. I'm saying, lift up something heavier than you are usually lifting up. Lift it two or three times a day for 10 to 15 minutes. Or, work up to lifting it 10 minutes a day. If we build muscle And do our daily 30 ~ 45 minute walks, we will lose weight and be in shape.

Since muscles use energy even when they are not moving, we can watch TV and lose weight - assuming we're not stuffing our bodies with junk food, candy, chocolate, or beer. Since muscles use more energy than fat, even our walks will be more beneficial.

As always,

consult a medical professional before starting off on a new exercise or diet program. Don't take your advice from a podcaster or blogger.

Now, the Weekend. You're with family. You're with friends. Both groups like to eat and enjoy life. If your family and friends eat together, you can't skip a meal. Besides sitting down with everyone else makes for a more enjoyable meal. You can demand everyone bend to your desire to lose weight - in which case you might lose friends, too. Or you can control yourself.

Instead of eating lots of food with friends, eat a reasonable amout. Instead of drinking lots of alcohol, drink a little. And, if possible, exercise more on the weekends. Sometimes it's not possible because you have family activities but try to find time to take a walk. Walk with your family! That'll make it more fun.

Hopefully, your friends and family will support you and not say things like "You're so skinny!" just because you've lost a few pounds.

Here is a link to a very good article from a British newspaper (The Independent) about how to determine if you are obese, pre-obese, overweight, or fit. And no, it is not related to BMI. Can you be fit but unhealthy?

Things to think about if you want to lose weight; if you want to go from obese to fit.

  • 1. Set a goal - write it down and put it somewhere you will see it everyday: refrigerator, mirror, TV.
  • 2. Find inspiration - find someone who has lost a considerable amount of weight and follow their example.
  • 3. Document your progress - make a chart and keep it up to date.
  • 4. Exercise - Yes, walk it or lift it but exercise everyday.
  • 5. Watch what you eat and document it - write down exactly what you eat and drink. Put it somewhere you will see it everyday: refrigerator, mirror, TV, cell phone wallpaper.
  • 6. Keep it visible: your goal, your exercise, your food.
  • 7. This is forever - this is not just a six-week fitness program; this is your new life.

Speaking of inspiration - here is a woman who lost a bit of weight over a 18-month period.

Remember: See a medical professional before making any

drastic changes in your eating or exercise habits.

Winter is slowly walking its way out of our lives and it will soon be spring. We need to put a spring in our step by getting out of bed, out of the house and into an exercise routine that could include only walking. Walk your way to health. Here's something from the Mayo clinic that may be of use to you all.

From the Mayo Clinic

Benefits of walking

Walking, like other exercise, can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. Walking can help you:

  •
    • Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol)
    • Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol)
    • Lower your blood pressure
    • Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes
    • Manage your weight
    • Improve your mood
    • Stay strong and fit

All it takes to reap these benefits is a routine of brisk walking. It doesn't get much simpler than that.
