Episode 11: How To Sneak Exercise
May 24, 2009 07:19 AM PDT
This episode deals with getting exercise when you least expect it. We're trying to increase our consumption of calories so we can lose weight - without spending a lot of time at an expensive gym or a lot of money on equipment. A 15-minute walk before lunch to get your muscles in gear; a few stairs instead of the elevator; parking on the opposite side of the mall and parking as far from the mall entrance as you can; pumping iron while you watch Lost. You don't need to do two hours of aerobics three times a week. You need to do a consistent amount of exercise whenever you can. http://www.livestrong.com is Lance Armstrong's website that deals with, among other things, fat loss, diet, nutrition, stress, and dares. Yes, dares to accomplish what you want to accomplish. Towards the end I stumbled upon a man practicing the Sanxian - the Chinese three-stringed instrument that looks like the Japanese shamisen (which came from the sanxian). In the podcast I call it a Chinese shamisen. My Chinese friends will kill me if they hear that. Episode 10: Cholesterol - Good or Bad?
May 14, 2009 07:35 PM PDT
A brief discussion about cholesterol and whether it is good or bad and how can we eliminate the bad while accentuating the positive. About 10 minutes. Also, a link or two about weight loss. Timothy Ferriss (he wrote a book about not working too long) has a post on his blog called "How to Lose 20 lbs of Fat in 30 days Without Doing Any Exercise." (http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/) Highlights include: Avoid white carbs (breads and pastas)
His menu of meals is heavy on veggies and beans but light on the fruit. Meat and egg whites are okay. I have several times eaten the same meal many times in a row but it was for three days: carrots and apples. The combination detoxifies that which needs to be detoxified. Check out his blog and search for "fat loss." In other news of note, a study has shown that people who keep a diary or inventory of their food consumption tend to lose more weight than dieters who don't keep an inventory. Hmmm. Perhaps this is yet another reminder for me to start writing what I eat. Cholesterol highlights (from http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=512) The American Heart Association: Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is the “bad” stuff. You want a low number of LDL. LDL comes from eating fat. Yuck. High-density lipoprotein - HDL - is the "good" stuff. You want a high number of HDL. Exercise and fiber help you get the good stuff. Triglycerides are man-made and come from being fat, not moving enough, smoking, drinking... all the things that appeal to the couch potato. Triglycerides are not something you need or want to learn how to spell. Episode 9: Who's Walking the Village?
May 19, 2009 08:39 AM PDT
I neither ate correctly nor exercised in the past few days because work became extremely busy. I ate junk food and sat around all day. And whose fault is that? I'll tell you whose fault that is: mine. I should have ... famous words ... refrained from eating the junk and at least done a few push ups but... nooooo. I walk around a small village and talk about weight loss, exercising, the sights I see and Tim Ferriss' 20 pound weight loss in 30 days. Here's a link to his blog but not the 20 gone in 30 days post because I couldn't get it to open. In this one he gains muscle. (http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/04/29/from-geek-to-freak-how-i-gained-34-lbs-of-muscle-in-4-weeks/). I also talk about the shape of Japanese cities, how Japanese rice has few nutrients, and why I walked up and down 264 steps in Nagasaki. Twice in one day. .....

Music - a bit of jazz - was added during post-production of this episode where I talk about my walk through a small farm enclave on the cusp of a big city. A bit about rapid weight loss and about people who were forced to walk in a Tokyo subway. If anyone can identify the music, could you email me at goya2goya@gmail.com so that I can attribute the great musicians. Current weight: 66 kg/145 lbs for minus 2.2 lbs. Episode 7: Return of the Inquisitor
May 06, 2009 06:40 PM PDT
Grilled by my inquisitor about my weight and shape in this 12 minute episode, she urges me to increase my physical activity while reducing my intake of diet drinks. Good advice. Episode 6: Calories Per Hour
April 30, 2009 08:01 AM PDT
In this 12:20 minute ramble, I talk about me not getting a losing buddy, not keeping a diary, and a website that could help me do both. And keep my motivation and inspirational level high so I keep on losing. Hmmm. The website is caloriesperhour.com and it has useful - as opposed to spam-full or harmful - forums, tutorials, and a whole bunch of ways to count weight and fat loss. I stroll along the river in the relatively early morning (for me - 7:00) and you can hear people jogging, talking, and birds singing. And a train. ______________ Current Weight: 66.5 kg (minus .5 kg) (146.3 lbs)

April 28, 2009 05:06 AM PDT
On this 13-minute jaunt I talk about tools (machinery to help us lose weight), drugs (pills to help us lose weight), and the cold. And I had a thought, is our reliance on a pill or machine to help us lose weight a result of our society's expectation that these things will always help us and without them we're helpless? Should we be getting back to the basics of using our own blood, sweat, and tears (and muscles and self-restraint) to accomplish what we want to accomplish? Next time: Online fake loser buddies. Current weight: 67 kg (147.4 lbs) Episode 4: Seven Observations about Weight Loss
April 25, 2009 03:26 AM PDT
In this episode, I walk and talk about seven (or six) observations about weight loss. The first one I say is: "Habits are easy to kill" This, as you know, is not the truest of truism. Habits are the zombies of our lives: extremely difficult to stop and they keep coming back to haunt us. Other observations: Get a loser buddy, be consistent, have an attainable goal, keep a tally or inventory, and one other. What was it? I forget. Just a minute. I'll go listen to Goya2Goya and get back to you. In the meanwhile: Keep on Losing! contact me at goya2goya@gmail.com Episode 3: What's your Weight Loss Motivation?
April 21, 2009 05:08 AM PDT
Although the fool talking calls it Episode 4, this is Episode 3. On Episode 3 I talked about Cholesterol (http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=1516)
My Attainable Goal today was to walk to a bookstore about 40 minutes away: Success! My Motivation for losing weight: Avoid a heart attack and see my family longer. What's your Weight Loss Motivation? Email me at goya2goya@gmail.com ____

Episode 1: Goals and Tribulations
April 17, 2009 09:38 AM PDT
This podcast has a singular goal: to help me lose some unneeded fat. According to US standards I'm not fat (I'm in the healthy range of BMI and weight) but I have a potbelly and extra fat here and there that I don't want. And don't need. I'm planning to walk at least 30 minutes every day (somedays longer) until either I'm lost or my potbelly disappears. And I'm going to haul you through this mess with me for we live in the age of too much information. This particular episode is silent, but future episodes will be vocal as this is my goal: to talk as I walk to a slimmer me. Walk and talk until a portion of me disappears. Sounds like fun. Why don't you join me? Previous Page | |
